PASADENA, Calif. - Caltech women's water polo graduated senior Soumya Kannan has been named as one of two nominees from the SCIAC for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Kannan, a 2016 Fullbright Fellowship winner, put together a distinguished career that included more than 100 goals and concludes with a typical all-around line of 42 goals, 23 assists, 50 steals and 58 drawn exclusions as a senior. A three-time Academic All-SCIAC selection, two-time ACWPC All-Academic honoree and two-time team MVP, the bioengineering major earned this year's Caltech Director's Award for her outstanding contributions to the women's water polo team over her entire career in and out of the pool.
Kannan is one of two SCIAC nominees, alongside Cal Lutheran national champion volleyball senior Allie Eason. The pair will advance to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee ballot, from which 10 representatives and then three finalists from each division will be chosen. The Committee on Women's Athletics then selects the winner from among those Top 9. All 30 Woman of the Year honorees will be recognized, and the 2016 Woman of the Year announced, at an awards dinner at the Westin Indianapolis on Sunday, October 18, 2016.
