Track Set for Late July Facelift

PASADENA (July 17, 2018) – The Caltech Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation is pleased to announce that the Fox Stanton Track, located around South Field, will be resurfaced beginning July 23, during which time both the track and South Field will remain closed. The Barn, however, will remain open during this transitional period.

"The South Field renovations are next in a series of concentrated improvements our department has made to our facilities in order to reach our goals both intercollegiately and recreationally," Betsy Mitchell, Director of APER said. "Like North Field before it, we believe the work we have put in and will continue to put into South Field will develop it into a strength of our facilities."

Pictured to the right is a look at South Field's grass in 2010 in comparison to the present-day grass, pictured in the thumbnail. While the natural grass has perhaps never looked better thanks to greater care being taken to maintain it in that span, the focus will now turn toward the surrounding track, which will be given a fresh coat of orange polyurethane. A material popular in home furnishings, the polyurethane coat on top of soft base will make for a faster, more durable track with great resistance to the natural elements. The new track will serve as the home for future track events and service the needs of all Caltech intercollegiate programs, physical education and recreational users.
