Beavers Face Three Teams in Three Days

The Caltech baseball team hit the final portion of SCIAC play this weekend with a three-game weekend against Whittier, Occidental and ClaremontMuddScripps.

April 15 - Whittier 12, Caltech 3 (Box Score)

The Beavers scored the first three runs of the afternoon as they started the contest with three consecutive hits. Blaine Matulevich and Brian Penserini each banged out a single and were driven home when Eric Schropp tripled. Schropp made the score 3-0 when he scored on an Albie Lavin sacrifice fly.

Whittier put six runs on the board in the second inning. The big blow came when Andrew Vallejo hit a grand slam over the left field wall. The Poets put two unearned runs on the board off of Austin Straus' two-run double.

The score remained 6-3 until the eighth inning when the Poets tacked on three more runs. The visitors put the game away with a three run ninth inning.

Mitch Petersen went six innings for the win. The freshman struck out five and gave up six hits. Austin Nogueiria worked the final three innings for the save, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Brian Penserini threw a solid game for Caltech as the sophomore gave up six hits in seven innings of work while striking out five.

Penserini and Schropp each recorded two-hits to help the Beavers offense.

 

April 16 - Occidental 16, Caltech 5 (Box Score)

The Beavers jumped out for four runs in the second inning. Thomas Heavey drove home the first two runs when his double down the leftfield line scored Daniel Sexton and Albie Lavin. David Carrega's sac fly scored Nick Robertson before Eric Schropp's single scored Heavey.

In the third inning the Tigers put six runs on the board as the home squad brought nine men to the plate. Caltech fought back with a run in the fifth inning when Robertson drove home Sexton with a single.

Occidental's offense exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning to clinch the game. Of the 10 runs the home squad scored in that inning, seven were unearned. Van Fudge ended the game with a two-run homerun over the leftfield wall.

Robertson had a team best two hits on the afternoon while scoring a run and driving in another. Sexton had a hit while scoring two runs. Heavey's had two RBI, a hit and a run scored to help aid in the Beavers offense.


April 17 - CMS 15, Caltech 2 (Box Score)

ClaremontMuddScripps put a run on the board in every inning but the second inning en route to the victory. All of the players in the Stags starting line-up registered a hit with six different players recording multi-hit game for the visitors.

With the Stags leading 5-0 after the top of the third inning, the Beavers plated their first run of the afternoon when Albie Lavin scored on a Brendan Sheehan ground out. ClaremontMuddScripps put to rest any hopes of Beaver comeback with two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.

Sheehan went 1-for-2 while driving in both of Calech's runs.

Jason Rehhaut went 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the ClaremontMuddScripps offense. William Knowles went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Matt Allen worked five innings on the mound to earn the victory. The sophomore gave-up four hits while striking out three.
