PASADENA, Calif. – The La Sierra baseball team jumped out early and used Caltech errors en route to a 13-4 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles put a six spot on the board and batted around in the first inning. During the first frame the visitors sent 10 men to the plate. Ryan Diaz and Michael Hinojos each drove in a pair of runs in helping La Sierra grab control of the game. Caltech plated a run in the bottom half of the first when Daniel Sexton singled home Blaine Matulevich.
Caltech crept a little closer with a run in the bottom of the third. Matulevich scored on an RBI groundout from Sexton to make the score 6-2.
La Sierra put to rest any hopes of a continued comeback with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles put single runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings respectively to stretch their lead to 11-2. A pair of runs in the top of the seventh rounded out the La Sierra run total.
The Beavers put a pair of runs on the board when Sexton and Jerome Skelly crossed the plate in the eighth.
The visitors took advantage of four Caltech errors during the win.
The duo of Diaz and Hinojos drove most of the offense for the Golden Eagles. Diaz went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored while Hinojos notched three hits in his four at-bats in tallying three RBI's.
Brian Penerini and Sexton each had a pair of hits for the Beavers.
Caltech begins SCIAC play on Friday with a single game against La Verne at 2:30 p.m. The game will be played at Caltech but will serve as a home game for the Leopards.
