The Caltech baseball team squared off against the University of Redlands during the final weekend of three-game SCIAC sets.
Next weekend begins single game weekends with one conference game per day during the weekend contests.
Game One - Redlands 17, Caltech 5 (Box Score)
Two big innings propelled the Bulldogs to the seven inning victory on Friday afternoon.
Derek Kearney limited the defending SCIAC champions to just one hit after two innings but Redlands exploded for nine runs in the third inning to take a commanding lead.
Caltech fought back with a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI hits by Albie Lavin and Brian Penserini. In the fifth inning Brendan Sheehan scored a run to cut the Caltech deficit to 9-3. However, that was as close as the visitors would get as Redlands scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning before sealing the game with a three-run sixth inning.
The Beavers got two-hit games from Lavin, Penserini and Sheehan. Penserini, one of the top hitters in the league, also had two RBI's while scoring a run.
Game Two - Redlands 9, Caltech 1 (Box Score)
A trio of Bulldog pitchers held Caltech to five hits while a steady offense aided in the opening game win.Paul Dippel, Mark Harris and Brock Jacobo combined to strike out 11 batters as the offense scored at least one run in five innings.
The visitors put a single run on the board in the first and second innings then busted open the contest with a four-run fifth inning. Caltech's lone run in the contest came in the sixth inning when Ian Garcia drove home Blaine Matulevich. Redlands plated a run in the eighth then two more in the ninth to secure the victory.
Joe Bell had a game high three hits while driving in two and scoring another for the Bulldogs.
Garcia had his first two-hit game as a collegian to lead the Beavers offense.
Game Three - Redlands 15, Caltech 3 (Box Score)
The Bulldogs offense was on full display early as they scored 10 runs in the first three innings en route to the victory.
After putting a three spot on the board in the first then adding two more runs in the second, Redlands batted around in the third inning in putting up a five-run inning.
Caltech scrapped back in the third and fourth innings. Ryan Casey hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning for the Beavers first run of the game. In the fourth inning Brian Penserini smashed a ball over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. The juniors bomb was a two-run shot as it scored Albie Lavin.
Six different players had two hits for the Bulldogs during their 18-hit attack. Marcus Himelhoch scored three runs while Sean McMillan had a four RBI game.
Penserini raised his batting average in league games to .436 with a 2-for-2 effort for the Beavers.
