Fifth Inning Burst Enough for Occidental

LOS ANGELES, CA – A four-run fifth inning was enough for the Occidental baseball team as they posted a 4-1 win over Caltech on Friday afternoon.

The Friday contest was the first of a three-game weekend conference set. The two squads square off on Saturday in a doubleheader at Caltech beginning at 11 a.m.

Both offenses were kept in check during the game's early innings. Caltech put a runner in scoring position during the second and fourth innings but couldn't get a run across the plate.

Occidental didn't get a runner into scoring position until their four-run fifth inning. The Tigers put together their inning with three hits and two errors. The first three hitters reach base for Occidental. The home team scored their first run when Albie Lavin mishandled a Jacob Allen ground ball. Lee scored two batters later to make the scored 2-0. The final blow in the inning came when Jonathan Brooks laced a two-hit single that scored Jonathan Wong and AJ Libuano.

Caltech hurler Derek Kearney continued to keep the Occidental offense in check in the sixth and seventh innings to keep the Beavers within striking distance. The Beavers put runners on first and third with one out in the eighth. They plated their first run of the game when Mason Freedman scored on Derek Kearney ground out.

Occidental got a hit in the eighth but couldn't cross the plate to increase their lead. Caltech couldn't get a runner on base in their half of the ninth as the Tigers grabbed the victory.

Kearney threw the first complete game of his collegiate career. The sophomore struck out three, gave-up one earned run and scattered eight hits.

The Beavers offense was led by Ryan Casey's 2-for-4 effort.
