LA VERNE, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2015) – Senior Derek Kearney (Carlsbad, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) allowed just two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in the Caltech baseball team's SCIAC opener at the University of La Verne on Friday afternoon.
La Verne pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning, although just one was earned. Kearney locked things down from there, not allowing an extra base hit over the next four-plus innings. The Leopards would tack on another run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and broke things open late, adding another in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth.
La Verne improves to 2-3 overall and starts SCIAC play at 1-0 while Caltech is now 0-3 (0-1).
The Beavers finally managed to get a runner to second base in the top of the third inning, as sophomore John Galden (Columbus, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) doubled down the left field line with just one out. Following a strikeout and walk, junior Daniel Chou (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) stepped to the plate and laced a single up the middle, but Galden was gunned down at home to end the inning.
Caltech got leadoff singles to start both the fourth and fifth innings but still could not muster anything until the top of the eighth, when sophomore Tim Menninger (Norristown, Pa. / Chestnut Hill Acad.) slashed an RBI triple to score freshman Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day).
Menninger led the Beavers offense, going 1-for-3 with a triple, walk and one RBI. Freshman David Watson (Fort Collins, Colo. / Windsor) and senior Oliver Curtiss (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Acad.) also recorded hits for Caltech.
Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will welcome La Verne to Pasadena tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 14 for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
