PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2015) – Freshman Garrett Levine (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Acad.) strung together a pair of hits while striking out a season-best six from the mound as the Caltech baseball team fell, 9-1, to Bates College on Monday afternoon.
Bates jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three in the first inning and tacking on two more in the second. Caltech got one back in the bottom of the first, putting men on first and second base with just one out and pushing one run across.
Levine settled in from that point, allowing just a single in the third inning and sitting the Bobcats down in order in the fourth. Caltech struggled to get anything else going on offense, though, and Bates struck again for three more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Levine would induce a double play to get out of trouble in the seventh and got into scoring position in the bottom of the frame, but the Beavers could not cut into the margin and the final score remained 9-1.
Levine was 2-for-4 at the plate and surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits and three walks over eight innings pitched. Junior Daniel Chou (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) was 1-for-3 with a walk and the Beavers' lone run, with freshman Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day) and sophomore Schaeffer Reed (Miami, Fla. / Westminster Christian) recording Caltech's other hits. Senior Ryan Casey (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) tossed a clean ninth frame in relief.
Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will battle Occidental College (4-2, 2-1) in a three-game series this weekend. Caltech will host Oxy on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
