EVANSTON, Ill. – In the final dual meets of the regular season, the Caltech fencing teams took on some the nations best at the Northwestern Duals. Going against several NCAA Division I schools, the Beavers brought home victories and qualified individuals for the NCAA West Regionals the first weekend of March.
"We went to Northwestern and competed against some of the strongest teams in the country including No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 4 Princeton," fifth year head coach Michael D'Asaro said. "While it is very difficult for us to compete with the top schools mostly in part to their strong recruiting abilities, most teams make the mistake of underestimating Caltech's strong coaching staff and ability to find ways to be competitive."
D'Asaro continued, "Our strongest teams being Woman's sabre and Men's epee both scored impressive squad victories. Even though we lost many of our top fencers last year, we were still able to qualify six fencers to NCAA regionals. It was a great weekend for Caltech fencing."
The women's sabre squad had the best showing by posting victories in five of their nine face-offs. The Beavers beat Wayne State, Lawrence, Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, and Farleigh Dickinson.
The men's epee and women's foil posted victory three times during the two-day, 14-day event.
