IRVINE, CA – On Saturday afternoon the Beaver fencers completed their IFCSC conference schedule in an event hosted by UC Irvine.
Throughout the season Caltech has been competing with teams from UC San Diego, Arizona State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, USC, UCLA and Pasadena City College. Saturday's event concluded a series of events between the schools and awards were presented.
Saturday's action saw the women's foil wrap up the year with a second place finish by posting 11 victories; just three behind UCSD for the top spot. The women's epee team tied for second with UCSB but lost out on a tiebreaker to ultimately finish third.
Between epee, foil and saber the women's squad finished the year third overall in the conference standings. The season's final totals for the women had them fencing in 316 matches during conference action where they won 199. The epee team recorded 83 wins while the foil squad posted 74 victories while the saber contingent tallied 42 wins.
The men's foil team posted 10 wins on Saturday which was just behind UCSD's top spot of 14 wins. The epee squad overcame some injuries to place third just behind UCLA and UCSD.
When everything was added up the men's team placed fifth overall in the league. The season ending totals had the men competing in 378 matches where they posted 182 wins. The top squad was the foil team (77 wins) while epee won 62 times and saber recorded 43 wins.
Caltech will host the NCAA West Regional on Saturday at the Braun Gym beginning at 9 a.m. Attending the event will be Stanford, Air Force and UC San Diego. The top finishers from each respective weapon will advance to the NCAA Championships.
