PASADENA, Calif. (Aug. 16, 2016) – The Caltech men's and women's fencing teams have released their schedule for the 2016-17 season. The Beavers are set to compete in eight total tournaments over the course of the season ranging all over the country, including Penn State, Northwestern and Stanford.
Opening the season, the Beavers compete in a pair of IFCSC competitions at UCLA and UC-Irvine, with a select few Beavers traveling south to UCSD on Nov. 5 for the elite BladeRunner USFA ROC, where Qifan Wang (Vancouver, B.C., Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) placed an impressive 11th in the épeé as a rookie. Following a two-week break, Caltech heads to UC Riverside for a third IFCSC meet before breaking for the New Year.
With a long break going into 2017, the Beavers host the West Invitational on Jan. 15. The Northwestern Duals loom two weeks later, from Jan. 29-30; both the men's and women's squads recorded a handful of key weapon victories to post two team wins apiece at last year's event.
Next up on Feb. 4, the Beavers travel to Chandler, Ariz. for another USFA ROC. Later in the month, Caltech again will host the IFCSC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 26. Last season, the men's team finished second behind an undefeated showing from the épeé team and a second-place finish in foil, while the women's squad placed fourth, led by épeé in third place. A trio of returners medaled last year, with Wang and Matthew Jin (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) each claiming first place in men's épeé and foil, respectively, while then-junior Christina Meyer (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School) took third place in the women's épeé.
The Beavers will look to better last year's record of 12 combined qualifiers for the NCAA West Regional, which takes place Mar. 4 at Stanford, with the top few finishers in each weapon earning automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
