Caltech Comes Up Short, Fontbonne Holds On

Caltech freshman Mike Edwards poured in 30 points and sparked his team to a late 17-8 run to pull within 8 points to visiting Fontbonne, but it was not enough as the guests held on to win, 68-60 in Pasadena. The Griffins converted 10 of 14 free throws during the last 6 minutes of the contest to seal the victory after losing to SCIAC member Whittier College on Friday night.

The Beavers opened the game on a jumper by Edwards and gained a 5-point lead on two freebies by freshman Jesse Shevin with 13:59 left in the first half. Caltech still had the edge with 10:13 to play, but a Fontbonne time out, two quick layups by the Griffins, and two dunks allowed the visitors to gain a 10-point advantage with 2:01 remaining in the stanza. A free throw by Edwards and a layup by freshman Ethan Boroson cut the margin to seven entering halftime.

Fontbonne opened the second half with a 10-5 spurt capped off by another dunk at the 12:22 mark, and later upped the lead to 17 before Caltech's final charge. Edwards scored 19 of his points in the last 20 minutes while junior Ryan Elmquist added 12. The Beavers had only 6 turnovers in the half and shot 50 percent from the field, but did not make the most of charity stripe opportunities.

Edwards added 3 assists, 3 steals, and a blocked shot to go along with his career-high in points. He also aided in holding the Griffins' leading scorer to 4 of 16 from the field and 1 of 7 from 3-point land. Elmquist finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 rejections. Freshman Mason Freedman made the most of his minutes with a jumper, 2 assists, 1 steal, and no turnovers.

Caltech hosts La Sierra on Wednesday in a season opener rematch. Game time is 7:30 pm.

GO TECH!!!
