Men's Basketball Faces First Division I Foe in Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2014) – In one of what could be a season of firsts, the Caltech men's basketball team took on a Division I opponent for the first time in program history at Cal State Fullerton in an exhibition game on Saturday night.

Having lost nobody to graduation and with 12 players returning from last year's squad, Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers are primed for an historic season.  They wrote the first chapter of their story as they faced the Titans from the Big West Conference in their final tune-up for the regular season.

"It was truly a rewarding and exhilarating experience to face a Division I program for the first time," Eslinger said.  "We accepted the challenge and played with confidence."

The Beavers recognized the gravity of such a meaningful event in the program's history and represented Caltech well as they embraced the opportunity to compete on such a high level.  Senior Andrew Hogue (Arroyo Grande, Calif. / Arroyo Grande) and sophomores Luke Lango (San Diego, Calif. / Pacific Ridge School) and Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) posted impressive statistical lines while freshmen Ty Ochse (Tucson, Ariz. / Canyon Del Oro) and David Kawashima (Studio City, Calif. / North Hollywood) flashed their ability and potential in what the Beavers could only call a successful night.

"We were looking to execute all we've been working on these first few weeks in the preseason, and I thought we did very well," Eslinger said.  "Cal State Fullerton has an experienced team with great size and athleticism, and we held our own for much of the game.  I'm glad we could help them prepare for their upcoming games against Santa Clara and New Mexico, and of course we have a number of takeaways of our own."

Eslinger and the Beavers will open the season on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. as they host Occidental College in the 110 Rivalry.  Fans can participate in games and festivities outside the Braun Athletic Center beginning at 3 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and Orange Out t-shirts at the entrance to the game at 7 p.m. – all FREE!

All home games will be available online via live video stream and Live stats, both which can be accessed via the team's schedule page at GoCaltech.com
