PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2016) – Junior Lawrence Lee (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International School) paced Caltech men's basketball with 12 points in a defeat to Whittier College on Wednesday night.
The Poets overcame a hot start by the Beavers to take a five-point lead into halftime before surging ahead in the second half to improve to 5-3 in the SCIAC at the halfway mark of conference play while Caltech is now 4-4.
The Beavers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and maintained that margin at 15-10 through the first five minutes. The Poets rattled off 10 unanswered points to reverse the lead and stretched it to double digits before Caltech cut it back to five over the final two minutes.
Whittier steadily extended the lead in the second half to a game high of 24 with 8:47 remaining. The Beavers staged a late rally with an impressive defensive stand, limiting the Poets to merely two points the rest of the way, but could only muster 10 points of their own over those final nine minutes to fall, 74-58.
Lee scored all 12 of his points in the first half, when he shot 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-4 beyond the arc. Senior Kc Emezie (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) joined him in double figures with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting while juniors Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and Nasser Al-Rayes (Doha, Qatar / American School of Doha) crashed the boards for 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Galliani also dished out four assists and junior David LeBaron (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) made three steals. Freshman Brent Cahill (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) continued his recent hot streak with nine points on 3-for-6 shooting and three assists in just 21 minutes off the bench.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers begin the second half of conference play at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (7-9, 2-6) on Saturday, Jan. 30.
