UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2016) – A select few Beavers represented Caltech fencing at the 2016 Garrett Penn State Open this past weekend, with junior Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto Senior) recording the top performance with a 14th-place finish in the men's épée.
Lo competed alongside sophomores Qifan Wang (Vancouver, B.C., Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and Alex White (Dallas, Texas / North Hills) in an exceedingly difficult field which included 21 A-rated fencers among the 32 entrants. The junior was the only one to advance out of pool play, but he fell to the #3 seed in direct elimination. Meanwhile, Wang placed 24th after a hot 4-3 start in the first pool play round, but went winless in the second round to miss the DE stage.
Senior Christina Meyer (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School) represented the women's team with a 29th-place finish in a field of 42. She placed ahead of seven higher-rated fencers thanks to a trio of wins in pool plays, but just missed out on a Top-24 spot to advance to direct elimination.
Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers break for the Winter Recess and return to the strips when they host their first NCAA competition of the year – the West Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 15.
