PALO ALTO, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2018) – The Caltech men's fencing team's epee squad got the job done against half of its opponents at the Stanford University-hosted Western Invitational last weekend.
The men's epee group, made up of seniors Ethan Lo and Spencer Strumwasser, junior Qifan Wang (Surrey, Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and freshmen Zimo Zhu (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and Ethan Jaszewski claimed 5-4 victories over University of California San Diego, University of the Incarnate Word and the University of Florida's club team. Lo avenged a victory over the fencer who ousted him at November's Bladerunner Tournament and also picked up a victory over the fencer who ousted the top-seeded Zhu at that same tournament. The men's foil team picked up their lone victory of the weekend over the Florida club team, a 5-4 triumph. Sophomore Evan Yu (Irvine, Calif. / University) starred for the foil squad with three wins in the match.
The women's epee group picked up its lone victory of the day with a 5-4 victory over Vassar College. After dropping the first two bouts, the squad won five of the final seven decisions to pick up the win. Freshman Laura Hu led the Beavers with five victories, including the first win to kickstart things for her team. Sophomore Ariel Stiber (Kenmore, Wash. / Inglemoor) earned the Beavers' other two wins of the match, including the decisive decision.
Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will next head to the Stevens Invitational in Hoboken, N.J. on Jan. 20 and 21.
