WHITTIER, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2015) – Freshman Jack Banaszak (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy-Chase) became the first Beaver to tally a goal and an assist in the same game since 2010 as the Caltech men's soccer team fell to Whittier College, 9-2, on Saturday.
The Beavers drop to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC while the Poets are now 2-1-1 (1-0-1).
Whittier stepped on the gas immediately, ripping three shots within the first five minutes, the third of which snuck by junior J.D. Feist (Richardson, Texas / Jesuit College Prep). The Beavers responded quickly with their first goal of the season in the 10th minute as senior Theodore Wilkening (Bowie, Md. / Elen) converted a double assist from junior Schaeffer Reed (Miami, Fla. / Westminster Christian) and Banaszak.
Feist was called upon to make a second save shortly after the Beavers had leveled, but Whittier went ahead in the 20th minute on a tap-in from a sharp cross. Both defenses weathered a handful of shots over the remainder of the half, with Feist making a further three stops and Caltech freshman Tristan Nee (Dallas, Texas / R.L. Turner) forcing a save at the other end, but the score remained 2-1 at the break.
The Poets took control in the second half, scoring four goals in the first 22 minutes to put the game out of reach. Caltech was able to muster three more shots on target before the final whistle, however, with Banaszak scoring his first career goal in the 84th minute unassisted.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (0-3-1, 0-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
