ORANGE, Calif. -- Fresh off of setting the Caltech men's swimming & diving 100-yard breaststroke record in his collegiate debut, freshman Thomas Gallup (Houston, Texas / Phillips Exeter Acad.) continued his run of dominance by winning three events for the Beavers in their Saturday SCIAC meet at Chapman University.
Gallup, sophomores Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood) and Jonathan Willett (Edina, Minn. / Edina) and freshman Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) started strong for the Beavers by winning the 200 Medley Relay in 1:40.41. Gallup also took first in the 200-yard breastroke (2:17.43) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.63), marking the second meet in a row Gallup won at least one individual event while having a hand in a winning relay team.
The Beavers continued their proficiency in the sprint events when freshman Alex Moraru (Southlake, Texas / Carroll Senior) won the 100-yard butterfly (56.49) and Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood) won the 100-yard backstroke (55.83). Lu also claimed first place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.92), making him one of Caltech's two dual event winners on the day.
Head coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers will face a lengthy layoff before their next meet. The team is off from competition until January 14, 2017, when they take on Occidental College and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a SCIAC tri-meet following a month-and-a-half of grueling winter break training.
