LA VERNE, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2017) – The Caltech men's swimming team won all but two events en route to a 146-73 team victory at the University of La Verne for Saturday's SCIAC dual meet. The Beavers also beat the Leopards at last year's Caltech-hosted dual meet, albeit by a smaller margin of 142-127.
The Beavers did well, in part, thanks to newcomers stepping up and turning in quality performances in what for some was their collegiate debut. Freshman Alex Janosi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) had a hand in winning three events in his first meet after spending the fall season as a contributing member of the men's water polo team. He first edged fellow Beaver and program record-holding junior Jonathan Willett (Edina, Minn. / Edina) in the 50 Free (21.90), finishing just six-tenths of a second off of Willett's record before the duo finished the 100 Free in the same order. Janosi won the event in 48.27 seconds. The pair then teamed up in the 200 Free Relay with sophomore Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) and freshman Michael Yao (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) to win the event by nearly five seconds (1:28.24) and again finish just six-tenths of a second off the program record.
Another freshman, Adam Kogan (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa East), also came through with a key win in the 200 Free (1:49.63) and anchored the Beavers' victorious 200 IM Relay team (1:40.75). He also came in second in the 500 Free (4:58.71), just two seconds behind La Verne's top swimmer.
Head Coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 13 when they travel to Whittier College.
