CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2018) – The Caltech men's swimming & diving teams opened the 2018-19 campaign at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges where they swam against the Stags and Occidental College on Saturday.
The top finish of the day came courtesy of sophomore Andy Rothstein (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill), who took second and came half-a-second away from winning the 100 Back (53.47). In doing so, Rothstein defeated all participants from Oxy. Rothstein also competed in the 200 Back and chipped in with two appearances in relay events. Freshman Timothy Yao (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) made a successful debut in the freestyle events, placing third in the 100 (48.53) and 200 (1:46.19) events before rounding out the top-five in the 400 (4:51.99). Like Rothstein, Yao swam the 400 Free Relay along with a quartet that included senior Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) and sophomore Adam Kogan (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa East).
Kogan, along with freshman Nick Jasinski (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake Central) represented the Beavers in the 1000 Free, where he set the Caltech pace with a 10:16.24. Additionally, sophomore JD Walker (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) made his diving debut in the 1-meter competition, placing fifth while also competing in the 50 Free, 100 Fly and 200 Medley Relay.
Head Coach Andy Brabson and the Beavers will return to the pool next year when they travel to the University of Redlands to meet the Bulldogs, in addition to Chapman University on Jan. 12.
