REDLANDS, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The Caltech men's swimming & diving team returned from its Winter break layoff to defeat Chapman University and push host school the University of Redlands at Saturday's SCIAC meet.
Caltech had several event winners to lift the team in its first taste of competition since December's training trip. Sophomore Adam Kogan (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa East), the Caltech record holder in the 500 Free, won the event in nearly five minutes flat and versatile freshman Nick Jasinski (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake Central) won the 1000 Free (10:14.98) and 200 Back (2:00.26). Both of Jasinski's wins marked incremental improvements on his top times in each event since coming to Caltech. Additionally, freshman Colin Chun (Los Angeles, Calif. / Venice) became the owner of the Beavers' fastest 50 Free time this season with a 22.08 and two-time NCAA qualifier Thomas Gallup made his 2018-19 debut, swimming the 200 IM, 200 Breast and 400 Medley Relay. The Beavers have now beaten the Panthers in consecutive seasons and came within just five points of taking down the Bulldogs.
The Beavers' best relay performance of the day came from Kogan, classmate Andy Rothstein (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill), senior Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) and freshman Timothy Yao (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Dougherty Valley). The quartet won the 400 Free Relay, beating out seven other teams with a 3:15.64 on a day where the team's youth and growing depth shone through.
Head Coach Andy Brabson and the Beavers will return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Whittier College at 10 a.m.
