PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 31, 2015) – Sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) opened the 2015 season with a win at #4 singles over No. 21 University of Redlands as the Caltech men's tennis team fell, 8-1, on Saturday morning.
Lebby, who set the program record for most wins in a season (12) as a rookie last year, picked up his second win in as many career matches at the #4 slot and his third win against a nationally ranked team.
The Beavers were swept in doubles, with the #1 and #3 courts falling by identical 8-2 scores while the #2 pairing of Lebby and junior Rushikesh Joshi (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) held serve through the first seven games before eventually bowing out, 8-4.
Redlands clinched the match with victories at #1 and #5 singles, but sophomore Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) and Lebby hung on serve through the first seven points at #3 and #4, respectively, before Pathireddy succumbed in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat. Lebby, meanwhile, got the break to take the first set, 6-3, before quickly falling behind and dropping the second, 3-6. The sophomore then stepped up in the clutch to dominate the superbreaker, 10-2, and earn the Beavers' lone point.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 as they host Biola University at 3 p.m.
