CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 6, 2016) – Freshman Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) came within two games of forcing a superbreaker as No. 40 Caltech men's tennis traveled to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Sunday afternoon.
Li and freshman Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) opened the day with a break at #3 doubles to take a 2-0 lead, but CMS would sweep all three courts. The Stags carried the momentum into singles, winning the first set at all six, although freshman Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) put up the longest fight, staying on serve through the first seven games. With the match already decided after CMS wins at #1,2, 3 and 4 (Nguyen was forced to retire on serve through three games in the second), Li found himself down 1-4 at #5 but won the next four games to take a 5-4 lead. His opponent recovered to take the match, 6-3, 7-5, as Liu also bowed out after winning five games in a 6-3, 6-2 decision at #6.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers host Wabash College (8-5) on Wednesday, Mar. 9 at 3:30 p.m. to begin a four-match home stand.
