TYLER, Texas (Mar. 24, 2016) – The Caltech men's tennis team's enviable depth continued to carry the Beavers as victories at the bottom four singles spots fueled a 7-2 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Thursday morning.
The Beavers are now 5-4 on the season, including a 4-1 mark against unranked NCAA opposition.
The match began with singles, where Caltech took two quick points as junior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) and freshman Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) won in straight sets at #3 (6-2, 6-1) and #4 (6-0, 6-0), respectively. TLU took its first point with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #1, but the Beavers added two more when freshman Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and junior Ramsathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) sandwiched a TLU win at #2 with a pair of superbreaker victories at #5 (6-1, 1-6, 10-3) and #6 (0-6, 6-0, 10-4). Caltech then swept doubles, with freshman Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) making his long-anticipated return to the lineup alongside Ruthwick Pathireddy in an 8-0 win at #2 while the other Beavers duos each won 8-3.
