CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 4, 2017) – Freshman Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) claimed the lone point for Caltech men's tennis at No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday morning.
Valencic, a three-star, Top-100 recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, faced off against a four-star rookie in the Stags' Matthew Jacobs at #4 singles. The Beaver went up an early break in the first set and held serve in his final game to close it out 6-4, then came out victorious in a 7-6 (5) tiebreak for the straight-set victory to even his record this spring at 2-2.
Senior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) gave West Region No. 16 Max Macey a real fight at the top spot, claiming the first set 6-4 before falling in the second, 6-3, and running out of gas in a 10-4 super breaker. Freshman Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) fared similarly in his first match at court #5, dropping the first set, 6-3, but rallying to take the second 6-4 before going down 10-6 in the super.
Caltech gave CMS a battle at both #1 and #2 doubles, losing just 8-5 and 8-6, respectively, while senior Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) nearly rallied from a 6-2 first-set defeat at #6, taking the second set all the way to 7-5 before succumbing.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers, now 1-2 overall with both losses at the hands of nationally ranked opponents, will host No. 21 University of Mary Washington (4-2) in Thousand Oaks, Calif. tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 5.
