REDLANDS, Calif. (May 5, 2017) – The Caltech men's tennis team lost its first round SCIAC Championship match to the University of Redlands on Friday.
The Beavers were unable to dig themselves out of a 3-0 hole following the completion of the doubles matches. They did, however come close to stealing a key match or two early which could have set them up for success in the singles matches. Sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) and senior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) came within two games of pulling out a victory at second doubles, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs' second team, 9-7.
Had they won, it would have provided Pathireddy time to continue his match, which was shortened due to Redlands clinching the victory. In his regular spot at first singles, Pathireddy dropped the first set in a tiebreaker (7-3) but rebounded in a big way in the second set, leading 3-1 prior to play being halted.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the court tomorrow when they take on Chapman University at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 9 a.m., though the start time is weather permitting.
***BACK DRAW CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN***
Gamble and the Beavers finished 2017 with some key victories against regionally-ranked foes and made strides towards furthering the program. Ruthwick Pathireddy and Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) anchored the team in top singles matches. Both players finished with nine wins and Valencic could have won more had he remained healthy. Pathireddy, meanwhile won matches against the 16th and 46th best players in the nation, ending his Caltech career on a high note.
