PASADENA (Mar. 27, 2018) – The 35th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team recieved contributions from up and down the lineup when they faced off against and defeated visiting Whitworth University on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshmen doubles team Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) had themselves another successful outing, winning 8-2 at first doubles to secure their sixth consecutive victory in what has been an undefeated March for the youngsters. The Beavers also picked up victories at second and third doubles, dropping just five combined games between the three matches.
From there, the back end of the Beavers' singles group earned the most dominant victories of the day. Sophomore Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles while freshman Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) picked up a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles. Sophomore Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine), slotting into his regular spot at fourth singles won his match, 6-0, 6-2. In the upper half of singles action, Shanker, Wei and junior Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) at third singles all scored victories to put an exclamation point on the day.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will be back at home tomorrow when they host Pacific Lutheran University at 2 p.m.
