Shanker and Wei to Compete at NCAA Doubles Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 9, 2018) – Freshman doubles team Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) of the Caltech men's tennis team have been selected to continue their season at the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, occurring from May 24-26 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.

Shanker and Wei will compete in the 16-team individual doubles draw thanks to an at-large bid. Caltech's top doubles pair earned the selection after skyrocketing up the ITA Rankings in recent weeks thanks to an unseeded championship appearance at the 118th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament followed by a key victory over the top doubles team at No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the SCIAC playoffs. The classmates previously set the Caltech single-season doubles wins record against California Lutheran University in the penultimate match of the regular season.

The duo will be joined by No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges' top doubles team as the only SCIAC representative schools in the field. The draw for the individual doubles championship will be done by the men's tennis committee and will be released on the last day of the team championship, Wednesday May 23.
