Shanker, Wei Advance to Doubles Finals at ITA Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2018) – The sophomore men's doubles team consisting of James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) survived two more tiebreakers to advance to the men's doubles Flight A championship at the ITA West Regional Championship.

The sophomores first defeated Carroll and Vemuri of defending SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, and slid by thanks to a 7-5 result in the tiebreaker, then achieved similar success against Gearou and Kronenberg of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges where they won 7-4 in the decisive tiebreaker. Shanker and Wei will next face off against second-seeded Katzman and Gordy of CMS on Sunday, with the claim to the SCIAC's very best men's doubles pairing on the line.

In men's singles action, freshman Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) won a dominant first set over Joey Schwartz of Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinals of 'Flight B,' but fell victim of a strong rally in the second and third sets, while junior Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) faced a similar fate, winning the second set, 6-4, over Thomas Reznick of the University of Redlands before coming up short in the fifth set. Classmate Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) picked up a win in the men's Flight A consolation round when he defeated Jay Yeam of CMS, 6-2, 6-1 before walking through to the semifinals only to come up short against Yeam's teammate, Alfred Simental. Meanwhile, sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) rebounded from Friday's match with a pair of wins in the consolation round of 'Flight B,' first defeating Thomas Kozowski of Whittier College in a match ending with a 10-8 super tiebreaker before walking out victorious against Nils Skattum of Pomona-Pitzer, this time 10-5 in the decisive super tiebreaker.
