TEMPE, Ariz. (Nov. 28, 2018) – Sophomore doubles team James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the Caltech men's tennis team have been ranked fourth in Division III and top out the West Region in the recently released fall rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The duo earned a spot at the 2018 ITA Cup in Rome, Ga. back in October after making history in September's regional tournament, becoming the first pair of Caltech tennis players to win an ITA-sponsored tournament. The sophomores went on to place fourth at Nationals, with the ensuing fourth-place ranking merely a formality. Additionally, Shanker ends the fall as the 19th-ranked singles player in the West region, though the upcoming season should provide him and his doubles partner ample opportunity to advance through those rankings as well when the spring gets underway.
Shanker, Wei and the Beavers will take the court again on February 10th, 2019 when they begin the regular season at the University of California Santa Cruz.
