PASADENA (Mar. 9, 2019) – The 29th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team swept singles matches for a second consecutive outing and dominated Vassar College in Sunday's home tennis match.
Caltech started the day with a big 2-1 doubles advantage thanks to a key 8-3 win from its fourth-ranked sophomore combination of Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and another win by freshman Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) at third doubles (8-4).
The Beavers followed up with the sweep of singles matches with each ending in straight sets. Freshman Jake Will (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) got the first dual match win of his career with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at sixth singles in the quickest match of the day. Shanker and junior Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) took care of business in the top two singles slots, holding their opponents to a combined five games between them. Senior Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) got the win at third singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win, and freshman Patryk Kozlowski (Irvine, Calif. / University High) won his matches by the inverse score at fourth singles. Junior Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) fended off the toughest challenge of the day but ultimately came away with a win at fifth singles (6-3, 6-4).
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will have a quick turnaround when they host No. 31 Swarthmore College at 3 p.m. on Monday.
