CLAREMONT, Calif. (May 3, 2019) – Sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the 22nd-ranked Caltech men's tennis team put up the Beavers' strongest fight of the day at top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the 2019 SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Shanker took the first set, 6-4, from reigning SCIAC Player of the Year Nikolai Parodi, also the top-seeded player in the region. Parodi then managed to rally before the match was called due to a 5-0 stoppage in favor of the Stags. The Beavers brought the energy early on during the doubles portion of the match but simply fell victim to a deep CMS team with championship level experience. Friday's conference tournament semifinal was played two weeks to the day after the regular season dual match, which was won by CMS also at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers now await Wednesday's news on who will be representing them at the upcoming Division III national tournament selection for which is based on the NCAA regional rankings. Collectively, the Beavers are losing some depth in seniors Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon), Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) and Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi), but have the talent and tools to be competitive at the SCIAC level again next year.
