PASADENA, CA – In a non-conference match between familiar SCIAC foes, the Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team posted a 12-5 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first eight minutes of action. Pomona-Pitzer continued their scoring pressure by opening the second quarter by posting four unanswered goals. The Beaver found the back of the net for the first time with a Galen Gao goal with 27 seconds left until halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to build on their 7-1 lead as they scored the first goal of the third stanza with 5:47 remaining. Caltech posted back-to-back goals by Tim MacDonald and Jack Blackwood to bring their deficit down to 8-3. The final tally of the period came when Phillip Clayman found the back of the cage with eight seconds left to give the visitors a comfortable 9-3 lead.
During the final frame the Sagehens posted a 3-2 scoring edge to claim the victory.
Caltech got a pair of goals from Blackwood while Gao, MacDonald and Jim Blackwood each scored one goal. Ben Grabowkski was busy most in goal most of the afternoon for the Beavers as he blocked 11 shots.
Clayman led all scorers with a five-goal afternoon.
