PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2014) – Sophomore Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Serra) recorded his 22nd hat trick in just one half to move within three goals of the program's single season goals record as the Caltech men's water polo team hosted SCIAC foe Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday evening.
The Sagehens improved to 7-14 overall and 3-2 in the SCIAC while the Beavers are now 7-16 (0-5).
The Sagehens scored two quick goals out of the gate to take the lead, but Bradley got the Beavers on the board with an exclusion goal to halve the deficit. Pomona-Pitzer regained the two-goal margin three minutes later, and although Bradley notched his second strike of the evening with just over a minute left in the quarter, the Sagehens scored again on the next possession to lead 4-2 at the first break.
Senior Matthew Lappin (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) brought the Beavers back within one less than a minute into the second quarter, but two quick goals for the Sagehens put Pomona-Pitzer up by three. Bradley completed the hat trick about a minute later, but once again Pomon-Pizter had a response, scoring three unanswered goals in the last two minutes to head into halftime up 8-4. The Sagehens tacked on four more goals in the third quarter and outscored the Beavers 5-1 in the fourth to cruise to the 19-5 victory.
Bradley has now scored 114 goals in his sophomore campaign, leaving him just three behind David Bruning's 1986 record of 117.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will host conference-leading Whittier College (16-12, 5-0) on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m., when they will also celebrate Senior Day.
