WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2017) – Freshman center Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) carried the load with five goals as the youthful Caltech men's water polo team tested first-place Whittier College on Saturday.
As the Beavers' starting center, Csaposs did well in making sure the offense flowed through him and the host Poets had as tough of a time as manageable in getting shots through at the Beavers' goalkeeping tandem. He led all players with 12 shots in addition to his five goals. He also helped key the Beavers' defense with two steals and fellow freshman Alex Janosi led Caltech with three steals. The speedster also won three sprints.
The Beavers trailed 9-7 at halftime and matched the Poets' scoring output with four goals in the fourth quarter. Junior John Lloyd (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) got the start for the Beavers and sophomore Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) relieved him in the second half, stopping three shots. Freshman Rahul Arun led the team with two assists and chipped in with a goal of his own while junior Charles Ross contributed two goals. The performance should no doubt inspire condifence within the young team with eights SCIAC games left on the schedule.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will return home for the first of a three-game stand when they host California Lutheran University on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m.
