CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2018) – The Caltech men's water polo team, led on both sides of the ball by sophomores Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) and Alex Janosi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) picked up wins against Washington & Jefferson University and Penn State Behrend on the second day of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
Caltech 9, Washington & Jefferson 8
The Beavers avenged an earlier defeat to Washington & Jefferson in Clarmeont, outscoring the Presidents, 8-4 over the final three quarters. Csaposs stepped up out of the center position with four goals and four steals. Two of the sophomore's goals came from five-meter penalty shots. Janosi, meanwhile went a perfect 4-for-4 on sprints and added to the Caltech defensive effort with five steals. Csaposs scored the go-ahead goal with 6:14 remaining in the third period, but the Beavers leaned on their defense to keep the Presidents at arm's length to the final whistle.
Caltech 10, Penn State Behrend 8
Caltech made it 2-0 against Penn State Behrend in 2018 with another strong defensive showing. Csaposs led the Beavers with four goals and senior Charles Ross (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny), who had a 17-game scoring streak snapped in the Washington & Jefferson win, started a new streak in Saturday's second game with three goals. Freshman Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) scored twice and Janosi added one goal in the second period. Goalkeepers Shaurya Gilani (Chicago, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) and Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) split time in net, with Gilani stopping eight shots and Justice stopping five. Much like the previous match, the Caltech defense needed to hold off its opponents in the final five minutes of the game, but this time led the entire match thanks to an explosive 4-1 first period.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will return to SCIAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 7 p.m.
