PASADENA (Oct. 14, 2018) – A team effort in the field allowed the Caltech men's water polo team to lead Chapman University in the second quarter and enter the final quarter with the game well in reach for what would have been the program's first win over the Panthers.
Sophomore Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) scored the first goal of the second period to put the home team ahead and finished the contest with two goals, two assists, and one steal. Senior goalie Shaurya Gilani (Chicago, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) made six big saves between the pipes including one to start the third period that nearly crossed the line, prompting Head Coach Jon Bonafede to call a quick timeout to secure possession for his team. Sophomore Neil Sanderson (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Winchester) led the Beavers with three goals and classmate Rahul Arun (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E Stevenson) played arguably his best game of the season back in Caltech's home pool, scoring a goal to go along with a team-best four assists.
Caltech traded goals with Chapman for much of the first half and entered the second half trailing by just two scores. The Beavers continued to keep pace with a four-goal third period and helped Gilani with four team-field blocks. The host Beavers also had the final possession of the third quarter and had a chance to make it a one-goal game heading into the fourth, nearly connecting on a one-timer from the left side.
Bonafede and the Beavers will be back at home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 to host Occidental College in the annual Orange Out game, set for 7 p.m. ET.
