Caltech Swimming Wins the Close Ones

Feb 5, 2010

Over the last two weeks, Coach Dodd and Beaver Swim Team had a tough time with the large and fast teams of both Pomona Pitzer and Occidental Colleges.  The women did manage a significant 91 points to Pomona-Pitzer's 143 and the men had their moments winning some races with "lifetime best" swims but ultimately fell to both teams.

On Sunday Caltech hosted a non-conference tri-meet against the Panthers of Chapman University and the women of Mills College.  The men had a battle in every race and the outcome of the meet was in doubt after the fourth event, as Chapman took a large 46 to 25 point lead.  Freshmen Tommy Kwong received his first college victory 200 IM (2:17.68) while Chris Hallacy and Ryan Newton grabbed the important 4th and 5th place.  The diving duo of Justin Johnson and Wade Hann-Caruthers placed first and second on both boards while Chapman diver Ross Memole got the third place.  The diving and 200 IM event propelled Caltech to a 63 - 56 lead.  Chapman countered in the 100 fly touching out Jack Blackwood (58.19 to Blackwood's 58.83), while Peter Buhler touched out the Chapman swimmer in the 100 Freestyle (Buhler 51.12 to 51.36).  The outcome was still up for grabs in the 11th event, with scores at Caltech 89 to Chapman's 86.  The next race was the 500 Freestyle and Blackwood won the race with a mad dash at the finish 5:36.42 to Chapman's Kellen Shanaha 5:41.35.  Chapman came back in the last individual event, the 100 Breaststroke, but Kwong grabbed the important second place (1:12.38 to 1:12.84) and Tony Tong, Tim MacDonald touched out the last Chapman swimmer to seize a slim 110 to Chapman's 102.  The last event is the 400 yard Freestyle Relay and the scoring for relays are 11-4.  The relay team of Zach Gomez, Alexander Hu, Hallacy and team captain Aryan Safaie placed second but clutches the four points and the 114 to 113 victory.

On the distaff side, the team from Mills College (Oakland, CA) had some untimely DQs and could not extend their lead as far as they needed.  Mills did hold on to a 53 - 38 early in the meet.  Then Caltech's Panna Felsen won the 1000 and 500 and Hanna Dodd took the 200 Free and Caitlin Regan won both the 200 IM and 100 Fly.  The diving team lead by Captain Peggy Allen dominated both boards and Caltech exploited the lack of Mills divers and took a large lead 92 - 71.  Justine Chia sealed the meet with a nice 100 Breaststroke (1:18.71) victory.  Even a Mills' rally at the end could only bring the final score Caltech 119 to Mills 112.  The day was filled with both men's and women's teams getting the valuable first places but they also worked for the all important third, fourth and fifth places.  "There was a million ways to lose both swim meets and only one way to win it.  I'm very pleased with my teammates because we needed 100% effort from everyone" commented transfer student from Scotland, Dianne Ferguson.    "It was like a bit of haggis from heaven".

GO TECH!!!
