April 2013 Aquatics Alumni Update

Coach Moser heads to Canada

Five year head water polo coach Josh Moser is leaving Caltech and has taken a position coaching water polo with the Maverick Club in Toronto, Canada.  Josh's enthusiasm and professionalism will be impossible to replace.  Josh's Caltech highlights include a men's thrilling 10-9 last minute victory over Connecticut College and a lady Techer's 13 -11 upset of Division I Virginia Military Institute.  Best of luck on your new adventure, Josh.

Caltech classes of 79', 80', 81'

The Caltech aquatic class of 1979-81 has been making a wave at present day Caltech.

Swimmer & polo player Dr. Sue Fuhs 79' has taken a position at Caltech working in the "Artificial Photosynthesis Lab" on a project that could change the world.  It is great to see her walking around campus again.

Swimmer & polo player, professor Dr. Dave Dowling 81', traveled from the University of Michigan to give an ME talk on "Novel Means for Identifying Acoustic Sources".  David's lecture was well received by a packed auditorium of Caltech Grads and facility members.  David is a triple threat 1) graduating from Caltech 81' 2) married to Cathy Kirschvink 81' of Caltech and 3) daughter Karen 13' will be graduating this June from Caltech with an Electrical Engineering Degree.  WOW!  (sidenote: Karen just decided to join fellow Techer Hanna Dodd up at Stanford for Grad School)

Watching Caltech against Claremont it was Loren Alving (81') in the stands after visiting her daughter Chrissie Alving-Trinh.  Chrissie is a sophomore who plays Water Polo for Pomona Pitzer.  Always a Techer Loren was one of the faster swimmers in SCIAC and always a great competitor.  Dr. Loren Alving-Trinh currently a doctor practicing up in Fresno, CA and all is well in "the Paris" of the Central Valley.

Finishing the crew of 80' grads is All Conference diver and Professor Lynn Hilderman who has been teaching Environmental Engineering at Stanford for a number of years and has an office just above the lab where Hanna Dodd worked last summer.  Lynn is the expert on airborne particles and just being a super cool person.

Clinton Dodd Retirement Party

May 17th 2013 Pool Party, 5-7:30 pm - dress Hawaiian (day before Seminar Weekend). Just to keep a head count on the number of prime ribs and lobsters to order (joke) please call the lovely Lisa Beach at 626 395-3250 and let her know you will be attending.  $10 at the door.  Love to see ya!

Women's Water Polo

Gone is last year trio - Janis Intoy, Caitlin Regan and Erin Hoops and the team is a little short of offense and swimming speed.  The team does not have any wins this year, but did have some good games against some of the better teams in southern California.   The team is lead by high scorer Hanna Dodd and the solid defending of Karen Dowling, with the outstanding talents of goalie Connie Hsueh also keeping the games close.

Christine Parry Visit

Christine Parry (07') is currently working in Boston at Lincoln Lab and was vacationing in the Palm Springs Area of California.  On the last day of her vacation she drove across Los Angeles to Pomona College during rush hour to say hello to the Caltech Alumni group that was there watching Emma Dodd and the Brown Polo Team battle Pomona Pitzer.  Just to make Parry's drive worth the effort, Brown won the exciting match 11 -10 on a last 9 second goal of the game.  Brown still had to stop a penalty shot with 2 seconds left in the game for the win.  Kudos to Ms. Parry for the effort and the warm thoughts.

Pre Frosh Weekend is Coming

Next weekend Caltech will be hosting 300 high school seniors that were already admitted for next fall's freshmen class.  We have a number of good swimmers and water polo players that will hopefully be attending Caltech and splashing it up in the pool next season.

Space News

Things have been quiet in Space News - maybe too quiet.  So last week, someone (not JPL) sent out the news alert that Voyager has made it into interstellar space.  It was picked up by all the major news agencies but it was wrong.  The Voyager mission and JPL made all the news programs and peaked everyone's interest about space.
