LOS ANGELES (May 9, 2015) – Senior Jared Forte (Lake Elsinore, Calif. / Elsinore) capped another impressive showing for the Caltech track and field teams with a big time drop against some of the top competition in the nation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday.
Facing competitors from Division I programs including UCLA, BYU and Rice, Division II standouts UCSD and Azusa Pacific and a litany of Division III and unattached stars, several Beavers continued to challenge program records in the penultimate meet of the season.
Senior Bridget Connor (Albuquerque, N.M. / Albuquerque Acad.) kicked off the event for Caltech in the pole vault, setting a new career-high mark of nine feet, 10 inches to tie for third on the program's all-time list. She now sits just two inches shy of the top mark, which she threatened to break immediately with three excellent efforts at a height of 10 feet, four inches. Senior Stephanie Reynolds (Tallahassee, Fla. / Lawton Chiles) made a bid at the program's 1,500-meter run record of 4:48 as she took out her race on pace through the first three laps before tiring down the stretch. Senior Eric Martin (The Woodlands, Texas / College Park) and newly crowned SCIAC 5,000-meter champion junior Aditya Bhagavathi (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro North) also made early charges at program records in the 800-meter run and 5000m, but both were unable to hold pace late in their races. Forte closed out the day with a blazing final lap to record a 12-second time drop in just his third career steeplechase, solidifying his position of fourth on the program list.
Raphelson and the Beavers will close out the season at the two-day Redlands Last Chance Invitational next Friday and Saturday, May 15-16.
