CLAREMONT, Calif. (Apr. 6, 2019) – The Caltech women's track & field team played to its strengths in middle distance events at Saturday's Pomona-Pitzer Invite, where the team saw received of the day's strongest runs.
Senior Michelle Marasigan (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / James B. Conant) finished the 800 at 2:25.05, a little more than one-tenth of a second off her PR (2:24.92) but also good enough for a significant season-best time. Competing in a field that saw participation from all NCAA Divisions, Marasigan finished the race third among SCIAC competitors. The 800 also yielded season-bests for senior Melissa Gutierrez (Pico Rivera, Calif. / El Rancho) and sophomore Sirisha Gudavalli (Boulder, Colo. / Fairview), who crossed the finish line in 2:29.02 and 2:35.08 respectively.
Caltech also got a big performance out of sophomore Molly Crotteau (Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton) in the 1500. Crotteau's 4:58.43 earned her 32nd-place overall and sixth-place on the Caltech Top-10 list and less than one second outside the top-5.
"Molly and all of our 800m runners really competed well today" Head Coach Ben Raphelson said. "The fact that they turned in strong times was a result of that. Overall, we're fairly pleased with where we're at with 3 weeks remaining until SCIACs."
Sophomore Nora Griffith (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) provided the Beavers representation in the sprints, competing in both 200 and 400 events. Senior captain Muskaan Goyal (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview), meanwhile posted scores in the shot put and discus and junior Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) came less than half-a-meter away from achieving a PR in the shot put. Rookie thrower Antonia Liu (Tenafly, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) picked up a big PR in the hammer throw with her 27.18m throw representing a near-two meter improvement.
Head Coach Ben Raphelson and the Beavers will continue the latter half of the spring at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual where they will compete againt three other SCIAC schools including host Whittier College.
