Gunnarson joined the Caltech track & field program prior to the 2015 season. He works primarily with the throwers and jumpers, while also assisting with strength and conditioning for the program.

He returns to California after a successful seven-year stretch working with high school and post-collegiate athletes in Colorado. Most recently, he was the strength and conditioning coach and throws coach for Niwot High School, which won the 2014 Colorado State Track & Field team championship. Prior to Niwot, Gunnarson coached at Silver Creek High School, where he coached state championship finalists in 17 different events ranging from the 3200m to the shot put. His star pupil, Valarie Allman, won multiple state championships, broke the state record in the discus and owns the #6 throw all-time by a high schooler. Strength and conditioning has been Gunnarson's life-long pursuit, as he continues to enjoy training and competing as a multi-sport athlete.  He was born in Covina, Calif.

Certifications: US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) strength and conditioning specialist, certified throws specialists; USOC Emerging Elite Coaching Program
