PASADENA, CA – For her efforts during Caltech’s three games last week, first-year forward Kate Lewis was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week.
The weekly honor is voted on the league’s nine sports information directors.
The native of San Antonio, TX averaged 17 points and 12.3 rebounds while starting all three games during the week’s contests. She also recorded three blocks and five steals while playing 106 of a possible 120 minutes.
“Kate certainly got her career off to a fantastic start. And she is only going to get better as she continues to adapt to the college game,” said head coach Sandra Marbut. “She is going to be a major asset to this program for many seasons to come.”
Lewis started the week by notching an eight-point, 10-rebound performance in her first collegiate game against Linfield.
Two days later she posted her first double-double in Caltech’s 73-61 win over Crown with a 16-point, 16-rebound effort. Lewis also tallied four steals in that 12-point victory. Less than 24 hours later she recorded another double-double by scoring 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a narrow defeat to La Sierra.
Lewis is the first Caltech female student-athlete to be honored since swimmer Jacqueline Masehi-Lano earned the accolade in December of 2011. The last women’s basketball player named the league’s Athlete of the Week was Krissy Dahl (class of 2012) in January of 2009.
