PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 25, 2015) – Senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) exploded for 24 points in the Caltech women's basketball team's season opener against Linfield College on Wednesday evening.
The Wildcats improved each quarter to record a 90-48 victory and are now 5-1 on the season while the Beavers start out 0-1.
Wong's sixth career 20-point outburst was fueled by a 4-for-9 performance beyond the arc but only one other Beavers topped even five points, with junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) chipping in 16.
After the teams traded baskets over the first two minutes, both endured a three-minute scoreless drought before Wong started to heat up with back-to-back treys. Freshman Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) followed with the first bucket of her career to stake Caltech to a 12-5 lead with 2:30 on the clock.
Linfield ran off three unanswered baskets on consecutive possessions over one minute to pull right back within a point and took the lead in the final 31 seconds of the quarter on a layup and pair of free throws. The Wildcats steadily extended the margin to double digits in the second quarter until Wong knocked down another two three-pointers late to bring the Beavers back within seven at 36-29.
Caltech hung around a five-point deficit over the first three minutes before Linfield really started clicking, which led to a 28-15 advantage over the quarter and dominant 26-4 fourth.
Eiden finished with four points and a team-high six rebounds in her collegiate debut while Lewis added five board, two assists and two steals to her line. Junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) dished out three assists and made three steals while also grabbing five boards.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will face the Illinois Institute of Technology (0-3) on Friday, Nov. 27 at Occidental College on the first day of the Caltech-Occidental Fall Classic.
