PASADENA – Senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) double-doubled for a second time this season in the women's basketball team's loss to St. Olaf (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon in Braun Gymnasium.
Lewis paced the Beavers early by scoring eight of her team's 11 first quarter points. She played nearly the entire game and finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, all of which came on defense. Sophomore Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn. / Staples) came close to her first double-double of the season with nine points and nine rebounds. She also led the team with four blocks.
St. Olaf opened up the game firing, connecting on four 3-pointers in the first quarter to put the Beavers in a 15-point hole at end of the first quarter. The Oles opened the second quarter with another three pointer, but Caltech returned fire with back to back layups by sophomore Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) and freshman Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis). The Beavers trailed 24-40 at halftime.
The Beavers went on a second half run sparked by a Schemel jumper and Lewis layup.Lewis then made another layup to continue the Caltech run. Before long, the Beavers trailed by as little as five points in the third quarter and ended the period down by just seven points. St. Olaf ended the game on a 9-4 run to put a Beavers victory out of reach. Lewis scored the final two baskets for Caltech.
Freshman Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) tied her career high of eight points and also added five rebounds. D'Costa finished with eight points, snapping a three-game double figures streak to begin her Caltech career.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will be shooting for their first win when they travel to Antelope Valley on Wednesday, November 30th for a 7:30pm game.
