PASADENA (Dec. 14, 2016) – Sophomore Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) posted a career-high 16 points along with seven rebounds and four assists in Caltech's women's basketball loss to visiting Knox College on Wednesday. The guard maintained her team-best shooting percentage by going 8-for-17 from the field and added four assists on the side.
Along with senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan), the duo scored the first three baskets of the game before Knox was able to get on the board three minutes into the contest. The Prairie Fire came back with a run of their own and cut the Beavers' lead to one with 42 seconds remaining in the quarter. With seconds remaining Haleftiras took the ball the length of the court and put in a runner at the buzzer to give the Beavers a three-point lead.
After Caltech scored the two opening buckets of the second half to give themselves a 10-point lead, it was all Knox the rest of the way. The Prairie Fire drained six three pointers in the quarter and took at five point lead into the final 10 minutes. The fourth quarter included scoring from all over the court for Knox and Caltech was unable to climb back into the game. Freshman Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) and Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) would score the final six points for the Beavers.
Lewis, meanwhile extended her double double streak to five games by scoring 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. The forward rounded out her strong all-around line with five assists, four steals, and three blocks.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will next head to Chicago for a game against on Illinois Tech on Monday, December 19th at 12 p.m. Pacific, 2 p.m. Central time.
