Freshmen Take Over Against Cal Lutheran

PASADENA (Jan. 14, 2017) – Freshmen guards Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) and Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) combined for more than half of Caltech's points in Saturday's SCIAC battle with visiting Cal Lutheran College.

With senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) ruled out for the game, Caltech was forced to lean on its freshman tandem more than ever before. The athletic duo delivered as the team's top two producers on the night. Peng led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds while D'Costa came up with 13 points and seven rebounds. Both players accounted for a team-high 38 minutes apiece. Peng punctuated her day by delivering a standout defensive performance, coming up with all three of her team's steals. Along with sophomore forward Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn. / Staples), the three players combined to go a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line.

The Beavers had their best moments of the day, both offensively and defensively in the first quarter when they finished the frame trailing the Regals by just three points. The Caltech defensive shell forced Cal Lutheran to spread the ball around, as no Regal scored more than four points in the first quarter. The visitors seized control in the second quarter, however and doomed the Beavers by going on a 17-2 scoring run through the rest of the quarter after Caltech tied the game right before the eight minute mark. The Beavers fell further behind in the third quarter, which limited their chances of a fourth-quarter comeback.

Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will look to pick up their first SCIAC win of the season when they hit the road to battle Pomona-Pitzer College on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
