PASADENA (Feb. 1, 2017) – Senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) dominated possession for Caltech in Wednesday's home SCIAC loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The forward/center scored 20 points to go with 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of action. The double-double marks her first in nearly a month, as her last game with at least 10 points and 10 rebounds came on January 2nd against Whittier College. Lewis currently holds the Caltech record for most career double-double games.
Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) also had a nice game beneath the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds of her own along with six points. Eiden, who makes up the Beavers' frontcourt duo along with Lewis also turned away four shots, as did her senior counterpart. Sophomore Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California), along with Lewis led Caltech with three assists.
Though Caltech did outshoot CMS by nearly six percent, neither team shot the ball particularly well with the Beavers finishing up at an even 30 percent clip. Turnovers were the likely difference, as the Athenas outscored the Beavers off turnovers 26-8, and won the overall turnover battle 11-23. The game never reached blowout territory, though the Athenas did keep the Beavers at a distance. CMS led by at least seven points althroughout the first half, but never led by more than 18 at any point. Caltech did mount a bit of a comeback in the fourth quarter. Jumpers from Peng, freshman Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis), and Lewis in that order cut the CMS lead to 12 just over three minutes to go before time ran out on the Beavers.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will return on Saturday when they host nearby rival Occidental College for a 5 p.m. game.
