Caltech Nearly Snags Road Win at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2019) – The Caltech women's basketball team came within one basket of pulling out its first SCIAC win of the season Wednesday evening at the University of Redlands.

The Beavers' best moments came in the even periods, outscoring the Bulldogs, by 13 points in the second and fourth quarters combined. The women's basketball team really began to find its form in the fourth quarter with 28 total points, even going on a 17-10 run over the game's final two minutes. Over the game's final 30 seconds, junior guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) and senior guard Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) alternated three-point makes with the latter player's final basket falling with just one second left to narrow the deficit to just one point with one second to go. The Beavers managed to send the Bulldogs to the line one more time but ultimately ran out of time to score the would-be decisive basket.

Peng finished the game with 17 points on six field goals, while Haleftiras factored in with nine points off the bench, all of which came from the deep ball. Senior center Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) once again had a standout showing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and a 7-for-11 shooting day. Junior guard Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) also chipped in with 14 points off the bench. The Beavers overcame a slow start, however, and went into halftime trailing the Bulldogs by just one point. Caltech also came away from Wednesday's game having won the turnover battle and outshot host Redlands by nearly nine percent from three.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will return to their home floor on Saturday, Jan. 5 when they host Occidental College at 2 p.m.
