Young Women's Fencing Roster Learning on the Job

PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2017) – Although a shorthanded roster and lack of experience will put Caltech women's fencing at a disadvantage in any match, the 2016-17 squad will look to its senior leadership to guide a young team as it finds its way in the IFCSC and NCAA West Region.

Schedule

NCAA Power Rating Scale

The Beavers' lone returning NCAA West Regional qualifier, senior Christina Meyer (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School) has already demonstrated growth from her junior year with a 27th-place finish at this past November's elite BladeRunner Regional Open Circuit competition.  With a victory over a USFA A-rated opponent (NCAA power rating equivalent of 80) and another two over B-rated foes (NCAA equivalent of 60), she brings by far the most experience and production to the 2016-17 squad.

Senior Stephanie Moon (Lilburn, Ga. / Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Tech.) rejoins the team after a year off and is one of just two non-rookies besides Meyer on the squad, along with sophomore Maia Stiber.  Moon will front the foil team, while Stiber and her younger sister, rookie Ariel Stiber, flank Meyer in épée.  Freshman Dessie DiMino, an 'E'-rated fencer entering Caltech, is the only other Beaver with fencing experience on the shorthanded roster of seven.

Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers open NCAA competition on Sunday, Jan. 15 as they host the West Invitational from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
